InstaFlex Consortium

InStaFlex is a Consortium between project leader PropheSea, Universiteit Antwerpen (M4S), Koninklijk Meteorologisch Instituut (KMI) & Oktow. Each of these partners brings their own specific expertise to the mix. Together, we aim to create significant added value for Belgium's flexibility market, both from a theoretical research perspective and from an applied engineering perspective. We would like to thank the Federal Government of Belgium for making this project possible by funding us through the Energy Transition Fund (ETF).

PropheSea

How the power of machine learning technology can be further enhanced? By taking into account domain expertise in every step of the process.

PropheSea was founded in 2020 by Tomas Van Oyen, driven by the belief that, in addition to machine learning, process knowledge (defined as mathematical models) continue to play a crucial role in to create added value with predictive software.

By complementing data-driven AI technology with process expert knowledge (defined in mathematical models), PropheSea aims to achieve revolutionary breakthroughs and efficiency gains while respecting specific expert knowledge and physical laws.

Universiteit Antwerpen (M4S)

M4S is the acronym for Modelling For Sustainability and is pronounced as MForce which refers to power we believe modelling will have in the digital world we are about to enter and the necessity to leverage it to reduce discrimination of sustainability goals by economical driven forces. M4S is an applied research team of the faculty of applied Engineering in the domain of Electronics-ICT working closely together with application domains within or outside the faculty to leverage its modelling expertise to reach the sustainability goals and to study the sustainability impact of decisions within the constraints of the different fields including business models, safety, ….

Our goal is to model the future to support decision making in different application domains ranging from real time control of autonomous systems towards high level policy making support to reach our sustainability goals within an economic reality and to monitor the impact decisions will have on our future. Our mission is to convince people of our believe that building a sustainable future is a multi-objective optimization problem that given the right weights to both sustainability goals and economic factors will result in a better more sustainable and livable world. We believe that our modelling and optimization expertise together with domains specific expertise can really make a difference. Or to put it differently: "We believe that this technology will support better decision making to ensure a future for us and our children!".

Koninklijk Meteorologisch Instituut (KMI)

The Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMI) is a federal scientific institute that provides meteorological services and performs research on weather and climate predictions. The mission of the RMI is to provide reliable weather, climate and geophysical services, based on high quality observations and research, in a context of national and international cooperation.

An important focus of the RMI is research and development of atmospheric models, which are used for weather forecasts in the short and medium term, and for climate simulations. Atmospheric models are also used in probabilistic weather forecasting systems. An ensemble of model runs is performed with multiple model versions that all differ slightly from each other. The differences are generated by disturbances in the initial state or by using different configurations of the model. On the basis of the distribution of the different members of the ensemble, uncertainty bounds can be estimated for the predicted meteorological variables. Ensemble forecasts can be further improved by statistical and machine learning methods, when training sets of historical forecasts and corresponding observations are available.

A meteorological ensemble can be further used as input for so-called downstream applications, such as models for renewable energy production or energy consumption at specific sites.

Within the InstaFlex project, RMI will provide the most accurate possible deterministic and ensemble forecasts, and investigate how probabilistic forecasts can be used for optimizing actions for industrial assets over multiple sites.

Oktow

Oktow works together with its clients to tackle the energy issue at hand. By means of site-visits, the Oktow Data Platform, accompanying analyses & reports with a view to certification such as BREEAM & SDG, among others, we work together with the client towards the best solution and towards a climate-friendly result.

Energy Metering is the most practiced and comprehensive branch within our story. Being smart with your energy is (fortunately) rapidly gaining importance. An old cliché, but quite appropriate: “measuring is knowing!” and together we investigate what we measure. Oktow visits you, maps the current situation, and discusses your needs. We develop a 'monitoring plan' and assist you with consultancy and advice.

Every building contains a wealth of information, but often that info is not yet available. Oktow installs sensors and collect the data. We are the crucial link between your installation and third-party systems. Thanks to our brand independence and broad knowledge, we can work with many different types and brands, using both existing and new meters & sensors.

With 'Energy Routing' we go even one step further. We use data to intelligently manage your energy and link 'commands' to it. Consider, for example, the control of heat pumps or charging stations based on your produced PV power. Energy from the grid or self-produced? Energy demand management or Energy demand management, we're smart about it!
